The 3 most innovative social-emotional districts

Today, more and more districts are supporting SEL as a focused strategy, not only for improving school climate and student engagement but also for improving student learning. The role of digital technologies in social emotional learning is crucial to change how students learn and develop SEL skills. Educational programs such as Eldventir SEL Platform help develop social emotional learning in elementary and middle-school students through video games, storyboards, and collaborative tools.

Social- emotional learning, is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions; set and achieve positive goals; feel and show empathy for others; establish and maintain positive relationships; and make responsible decisions. This definition comes from Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Research has demonstrated that if students are equipped with social-emotional skills to help them navigate often-challenging personal lives, they would be in a better position to learn. Here are the 3 most innovative social-emotional districts:

  1. Hawaii Department of Education/ Number of Students: 185,000/ Number of Schools: 283

The Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) believes the root of students’ success lies in social emotional learning. DOE has an established commitment to the “Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS)”.

CSSS ensures that ALL students achieve to their greatest potential when school administrators, students, teachers, staff, families, and school communities work together in compassionate, nurturing, and efficient partnerships. “The district has undergone a transformation by adopting a new school performance system, internationally-benchmarked standards, updated assessments, and more intense diploma requirements.

  1. Naperville (IL) Community School District/ Number of Students: 16,600/ Number of Schools: 22

In order to meet the needs of the whole child, the Illinois State Board of Education developed social-emotional learning standards, which must be implemented in all schools. Naperville Community School District (NCSD) developed their own SEL curriculum, created a parent and community committee, and implemented professional learning for scholar members and parents.

  1. Washoe (NV) County School District/ Number of Students: 64,192/ Number of Schools: 98

Social and Emotional Learning is an integral part of Washoe County School District strategic plan, Envision WCSD 2020 “Investing in Our Future”. According to WCSD, “SEL classrooms focus on developing students’ strong listening skills, disciplined self-awareness, and interpersonal relationships”.

WCSD has developed a set of standards aligned to the CASEL framework and the main purpose of the district is: “Every Child, By Name and Face, To Graduation.”

This being said, students with higher social and emotional competencies have higher academic achievement and better life outcomes than students with lower SEL skills. If the scholar community and parents do not focus on developing SEL skills in the new generations, it becomes a leading risk factor with several outcomes, including academic failure and social adjustment problems.

Teachers, school counselors, and principals are invited to run a free Empathy Module demo of Eldventir SEL Platform at their school, bringing innovation to the classroom and promoting an emotional learning climate.
